Curator’s note

This page is in Grandpa's own hand, dated 7-19-54. The penned column lists page ranges of this very manual: 24–30b (the Ascent of Chief Mountain), 73–78 (the Blackfeet), 102 (place names), 121–123 (life zones and trees), 169–196 (trees and wildflowers), 197–207 (geology), 214–223 (glaciers), 42–46 (the hotels). He was studying to answer his passengers' questions — exactly as Mr. Hays' letter at the front of the book asked. The fainter pencil lines bleeding through are from the reverse side, where he practiced schedules and times.
