To Our Drivers, Old and New
TO OUR DRIVERS, OLD AND NEW:
In presenting you with your copy of the 1952 DRIVERS' MANUAL, we wish you a happy summer in Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. I first thought of such a handbook in 1936. For the next summer, 1937, we published the first edition of this unique book. So far as we know, it was the first handbook of its kind and is now the only one of its kind provided for the passenger drivers of a motor transport system.
Beginning in 1937, we enjoyed the invaluable cooperation of Dr. George C. Ruhle in the compilation of the MANUAL. In presenting this edition we gratefully acknowledge, as well, the helpfulness of officers of the National Park Service of the United States and Canada, particularly Superintendent Emmert of Glacier and Superintendent Atkinson of Waterton. Our drivers' record for careful driving, courtesy, cooperation and trustworthiness is now a tradition. Let us keep it so.
A word of friendly caution: There is no thought here of making you talkers instead of drivers. Your job is careful driving. Your technical tests and training are precedent to the use of this book. In this secondary capacity, the aim of this handbook is to give you the historical, scientific and traditional background of this area so that you are to some degree equipped to answer the questions of your passengers. IT IS BETTER TO TALK TOO LITTLE THAN TOO MUCH. However, when a Glacier Park Transport driver is asked a reasonable question, we hope he can answer it correctly.
Yours truly,
Howard H. Hays, President — Glacier Park Transport Company
East Glacier Park, Montana — June, 1952
